Just a tip that I read in a photography book... When you have a single subject in a picture, you can look at the picture with a grid in your mind that has two vertical lines and two horizontal lines forming a rectangle in the middle. You then try to position the subject at one of the intersections of the grid. This gives the picture a little bit more of an artistic feel, and draws attention to the subject without putting too much attention on it. (I can put up an example of this grid concept with this picture to demonstrate if you would like me to)
